Brands are becoming entrenched in our language. Do we need a Band-Aid for this?

Yesterday on twitter and facebook I asked:

The question was prompted when someone tweeted a picture adding “I got a Twitpic of it” (or something like that) with a Yfrog url attached to the tweet. I realised that there really are brands that transcend their product and become the reference or become the name-sake for all other similar products. Is that worded correctly? It makes sense in my head but I’m not sure if I’m explaining it properly. I have no doubt that this is a well researched and well documented phenomenon but to be honest Google didn’t yield much.
